Sell your vintage Transformers

Generation 1 Transformers, the Hasbro and Takara robots in disguise that dominated Christmas lists from 1984 into the early 90s, are some of the most collected toys there are, and I'm always buying. Boxed, loose, mid-transformation and stuck that way: send me a few photos for a free, no-obligation cash offer.

What I'm looking for

  • Optimus Prime, Megatron and the other 1984–85 originals
  • Soundwave and the mini-cassettes
  • Dinobots: Grimlock and the gang
  • Insecticons, Triple Changers and the Decepticon jets
  • Combiner teams: Constructicons/Devastator, Aerialbots and the rest
  • Minibots, Bumblebee and friends
  • Later ranges: Headmasters, Targetmasters, Powermasters, Pretenders and Micromasters
  • Boxed figures, with or without inserts
  • Instruction booklets, tech-spec cards and catalogues
  • Loose weapons, accessories and spare parts
  • …and everything loose: broken robots, spare weapons, paperwork and half-transformed figures are all useful. Incomplete is fine.

How much are vintage Transformers worth?

With old Transformers, the paperwork and the small parts do a surprising amount of the work. A loose Optimus Prime is a decent find; the same figure with his fists, guns and trailer is a much better one; boxed with the instruction booklet, better again. If you find a bag of small fists, missiles, guns or chrome parts, photograph it with the toys and don't separate it out; those loose pieces often make the difference between an incomplete figure and a complete one, and they can change the offer. The same goes for any tiny robots mixed in with the big ones: the little partner figures that came with Headmasters and Targetmasters are exactly the pieces collectors are missing.

Condition matters in specific ways: chrome wear on weapons, tight joints, whether the stickers survived, and whether anything snapped along the way. But here's the part people don't expect: even broken figures are worth selling. G1 Transformers are restored and repaired constantly, so damaged figures have real value as parts donors. Values move around, so the number that counts is the one in front of you. Send a few photos and I'll tell you exactly what I'd pay, with no obligation.

Transformers questions

Are broken or incomplete Transformers worth selling?

Yes, more than people expect. Snapped joints, missing hands, worn chrome and lost weapons are all normal for toys that actually got played with. Broken figures are wanted for parts and restoration, so put them in the photos rather than the bin.

I don't have the boxes or instructions. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Boxes, instruction booklets and tech-spec cards add value when they've survived, but most collections come to me without them. Loose figures are the standard, not the exception.

Do you buy later Transformers too?

The vintage era is my focus: Generation 1 from 1984 right through its later ranges, Headmasters, Pretenders, Micromasters and Action Masters included. Modern reissues and current lines aren't for me, but if you're not sure what era yours are from, send a photo and I'll let you know either way.
